Monkeys and nuclear fission

71194-chimpFirst we taught them sign-language (a not-so-brilliant move on our part). Now they’ve learned to create weapons with which to stab each other.

The BBC reports today that researchers have documented 22 cases of chimps fashioning tools that are used to jab smaller primates. They’ve learned to sharpen tree branches with their teeth.

Sign language? Sharpened sticks? Nuclear fission? After all, weapons lead to war. What if one of the smarter monkeys is sitting somewhere in a monkey cave right now on the verge of splitting the atom?

Suddenly, “Planet of the Apes” doesn’t seem so far fetched anymore, now does it?
